Our phones are basically an extension of our hands, and social media is where many people connect. Whether you're building a personal brand, keeping up with friends, or just doomscrolling, these platforms have become a huge part of our lives. To help you navigate the digital chaos, there are six rules you should live by on social media.
This is the golden rule, no joke. That tweet you just drafted? That picture you're about to upload? A quick second of thinking could save you, as anything you put online—from a drunk photo to a rant about your boss—is out there forever. It can be screenshotted, shared, and seen by your future employer, your parents, or even your kids one day.
So, before you hit send, ask yourself: Is this something I’ll be okay with seeing again in 10 years?
You know that person that shares everything? It doesn’t have to be you. You're in control. Go through your privacy settings on every app and set them up so only the people you trust can see your stuff. Be smart about what you share—don't post your exact location, your phone number, or where you're going to be at any given time. A private account doesn't mean your life is private; it just takes one screenshot to go viral.
Social media can be a huge trash bag of negativity, but you can choose to be different. Instead of getting into arguments or spreading drama, use your feed to build people up. Start by sharing something that makes people smile. Being a positive person online makes the whole place a little better.
Things go viral in seconds, and unfortunately, that includes misinformation. Before you share that wild headline or a shocking stat, take a beat. Do a quick Google search to see if it’s legit. Check for credible sources. If something feels too crazy to be true, it probably is. You're not just sharing a post—you're influencing what others believe, and sharing garbage isn’t good for anyone.
Your mental health is a priority. If your feed is full of accounts that make you feel like you're not good enough, or ones that just make you mad, it's time for a cleanse. Hit that unfollow or mute button. Instead, follow accounts that inspire you, make you laugh, or teach you something new. Make your digital space a place that builds you up, not one that tears you down.
Social media is designed to be addictive. It’s a highlight reel, not real life. Set a timer, turn off notifications, or even delete the apps for a day or two. Get outside, hang out with friends, read a book—whatever you love to do. A little digital detox can make a huge difference in your well-being. The best part of your life isn't happening on a screen.
